Here I examined the parts I had left over. The curved parts that I removed from the lower bunk (top), the upper bed rail (middle), and the ladder (bottom). I had 2 of each of those pieces, except for the ladder.

The best solution to the height problem was to make two rails, one that is about 12" high, and the other that is about 33" high, and in the raised position they will overlap, in the lowered position, the bar to climb over is only 33" off the floor.

As for the length, I eventually decided that although it would be a lot of work, the best solution was to take the two bed rails, and cut them in half lengthwise. Then for three of the resulting pieces, plus the front bedrail for the crib, I would need to drill 24 holes in each to fit the dowels into.
